This year we kicked off Dr. Seuss Week with a Literacy Fair! Our school opened its doors on Saturday morning/afternoon to families and readers of all ages.
When students (and siblings) checked in, they received a brand new book to take home with them! Then they joined teachers, staff, and representatives from local college education programs for fun reading based activities!
Seuss Week Activities
Free fonts are one of my obsessions this year. For my classroom door and bulletin board, I went with a Green Eggs and Ham theme. I found the free font Green Eggs and Spam. However, I'm also a big fan of Grinched and Doctor Soos! I cut out the letters for the bulletin board using my Cricut Explore Air.
Monday: Wear Red and White Day
Also the first day of DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)! Thanks to our Literacy Fair, each student in the building had a new book to kick off the week! Students were also invited to bring a friend to school, so when the announcement came to drop everything and read they had a stuffed friend to read with!
Fox in Sox and the Cat in the Hat Day!
On Dr. Seuss' actual birthday, the teachers all dress as Cat in the Hat! We ordered t-shirts online and submit a new order each year, if we have new staff! It also is The Fox in Sox day, which means Seuss inspired socks could be found all arms and legs all throughout the building!
Each day I try to have something special to great my students and celebrate reading. It can be something as simple as a sticker or a Seuss theme item, although I think Seuss snacks are their favorite!
